How to Create a Great Team When You are a Leader

“The greatness of humanity is not in being human, but in being humane.”

― Mahatma Gandhi

What makes people great? The Merriam-Webster dictionary defines great as markedly superior in character or quality. I think that in order to be great, you need to:

  1. do acts that benefit others and not yourself

  2. exercise these acts without being ordered

Therefore, in order to create a great team, you need to let the team members carry on with their tasks without being told to do so. Every single soul is capable of achieving and doing great things if only they are given the chance. However, there are things like fear, insecurity, and pretense can keep people from showing their potential for greatness. In a team where perfectionism seems to be a necessity, members tend to keep themselves from going beyond their duties. With the fear of being shamed, workers tend to stay within their comfort zone so as to keep themselves from making mistakes. This kind of mindset keeps your team members from being reactive, satisfied, and great at their job.

How can you encourage your team to do great things rather than order them?

First and foremost, you need to establish trust. Remember that our behavior is shaped by our personality and the kind of environment we are in. When a team member acts a certain way, we are quick to judge his or her personality. We tend to forget that a toxic environment encourages a person to act badly. On the other hand, a pleasant environment encourages everyone to do good things. Since it is hard to transform personalities, your job as a leader, should be to establish an environment of trust and confidence. By trust we don’t mean that your members think that you, as their leader, is faultless or is always right. Trust means that your decisions will be for the good of the whole team.

Second, let the members think like a leader. Encourage passion and initiative in the minds of your team members by letting them take control. Instead of making them feel that they need your go signal, let them tell you what they intend to do when handling a certain task. Telling them what to do will rob them of the sense of responsibility. They will think that if the action fails, they will not be blamed. On the other hand, if you let them think that they are in full control of the task, they will perform as best as they could.

Some leaders are more comfortable when they are the ones making every single decision. This is normal but this is not the right way to create a great team. Your team will be less pressured and more satisfied with their work if you let them shine and actively exhibit their knowledge and capabilities. Keep yourself from creating a team of followers. This will just undermine their sense of initiative. Treat your members as leaders so that they act with a sense of responsibility.

The Only Thing You Need to Possess to Reach Your Full Potential

“The problem with the world is that the intelligent people are full of doubts, while the stupid ones are full of confidence.”
― Charles Bukowski

Mr. Bukowski aptly summarizes what most of us have observed. Gifted individuals are more prone to vulnerability and insecurity than their less skilled friends. The reason behind this is explained thoroughly by Carol Dweck in her book Mindset: The New Psychology of Success. Children with a fixed mindset tend to believe that failing at a task means they are stupid or unintelligent. Dr. Dweck and her student Claudia Mueller did an experiment where a group of children was praised for their smartness while another group was praised for their efforts. The study showed that children who were praised for being smart easily lost their confidence and doubted their ability after failing a test while those who were praised for their hard work believed that their failure was due to the fact that they did not try hard enough. They therefore worked harder on the final test.

This experiment tells us two things:

1. The kind of feedback that children get from their mentors has a huge impact on their confidence.

2. We need to have a growth mindset rather than a fixed mindset in order to reach our full potential.
If you have a growth mindset, you choose to focus on honing your ability or learning new skills rather. You direct your efforts to getting smarter over showing that you are already smart. On the other hand, if you have a fixed mindset you believe that you already know enough and that you are born with a natural ability to do a certain task.

Now, if you think that you have been approaching life with a fixed mindset, what you need to do is shift to a growth mindset so you can reach your full potential. How can you do this?

  • Analyze your attitude. Do you believe that improvement is impossible? Do you believe that effort matters? Remember that if you don’t firmly believe that improvement is attainable, you will fail to see that your skills are actually improving.
  • Be accepting of failure. Whenever you are about to start a project remind yourself that you might fail and that is okay. You are going to make mistakes along the way. Embrace those mistakes. This will actually take the pressure of being perfect off your shoulders so you can focus on just doing your job.
  • Look for help. The problem with people with fixed mindset is that they are too proud to ask for help. The truth is, asking questions will actually make you look more intelligent than by going at things alone.
  • Be your own competition. It is tempting to compare your results or your progress with other people. Each time this happens remind yourself that you are doing your best to improve your skills. As long as your today is better than your today, you are on the right track.

A fixed mindset is a self-fulfilling prophecy. If you believe that you are either born with it or without it, you will keep yourself from acquiring the necessary skills that will lead you to reaching your full potential. Remember to replace “I am not good at this,” to “I am not good at this yet.”

I just returned from a 3 day trip to the beautiful San Diego and it was absolutely incredible.  Today I am thinking about all of the amazing people in my life as a result of the decision I made to become a network marketer.  These past few days were filled with laughter, tears, hugs, light bulb moments but most of all relationship building.  The beautiful thing about network marketing is that we get to choose our business partners and the people to share our journey.  How incredible is that?  I look back at all the years I spent in corporate America surrounded by people who I wouldn’t necessarily want to be around but someone else picked them as my co-workers.  What an empowering feeling to know that I/we as network marketers get to choose the people to share our journey…

It was my absolute honor to spend these days with driven, committed and passionate people who have figured out that their freedom comes when they are willing to put their dreams above their fears and fight for what they want.  At the core of their dream is hope.  Hope for a better life.  Hope for the freedom to choose to live the way they want to live on their own terms, to the beat of their own drum.  I love surrounding myself with people who get it.  When that hope and dream begins to swell up inside of you, when you’re starting to hear that voice screaming inside…The one that’s telling you you’re capable of so much more…that the best is yet to come…that it’s time to follow that dream.  It’s time to act.  We all can do it!!!

We begin by simply allowing the dream to be.  We dare to dream and in doing so we give light to that same hope that has sparked so many other wondrous futures.  I love being around people who are willing to pay the price to live the life they were put here to live.  We each have the power to create our own destiny.  We simply have to accept the challenge and, in many cases, be willing to open the gifts that are given to us.

Thank you to all of the amazing people who allowed me to be part of their life these past 4 days.  I am forever grateful to know you and have the privilege of sharing your journey.  Thank you for the heart felt talks, the hugs and allowing me to live my purpose of empowering you to live your best life…

New Beginnings

a new beginningIt’s amazing to me how many people spend their lives settling for less than what they want or deserve because they are afraid to change course and venture into the unfamiliar. They let fear of change keep them stuck and unfulfilled. I was once one of these people until I realized that I would never have what my heart ached for unless I was willing to step out of all that was comfortable to me and listen to that voice inside that was screaming for me to move. It was time for a new beginning.

Here’s a perfect example of what I just don’t get. I was listening to a man speak about how much he hated the job that he had done for the past 25 years. He said that everyday he went to work he felt like it must feel like in prison. He dreaded getting up each morning to go to his job and he sounded so defeated and “joyless”. And, besides the fact that he wasn’t happy, he wasn’t making enough money to live. I asked him why he would spend 25 years of his life doing something that he had no passion for while building someone else’s dream and he had no answer.

It was at that time that I decided that I must help this man by sharing my business with him as I had created total freedom in my life by this point and I was once in his shoes. I was completely blown away by his response. He told me he could never consider anything else because he only had 5 years left until his retirement. My words “So you mean to say you are going to spend the next 5 years of your life doing something you absolutely hate in order that you can retire in 5 years with a pension that will be 1/3 of what you can’t live on now?” His answer was yes which absolutely made no sense to me.

We are all put here on this earth to let our light shine and make a difference and how dare us settle and play small because we are fearful of change. Too many of us settle in mediocrity most of our lives and in the end look back with regret. We have the opportunity every single day for a new beginning with a clean slate and yet we stay put. If what you are doing is not meeting your needs either spiritually, physically or financially, you have the power to change that beginning now.

I love new beginnings and have been blessed with the instinct to know when it’s time to change course. Many people wait till January 1st to write new goals and plan a vision and direction for their life. How about now? Why spend another day off your course! Who is ready for a new beginning?

As I look back over the years prior to my success in Network Marketing, I think about all the things I wish I had been able to do… All the times I wanted to spend time with my family, my friends, or even myself. I feel like I missed out on so much that was important to me all because I had that J.O.B. to report to. Waiting all year to get that 1 or 2 weeks off is just a distant memory to me now but for most people, this is still their reality.

I missed so much and settled for so many years not knowing I had any other options at all. It wasn’t until 1997 when I was 50 years old and dead broke that I was introduced to Network Marketing for the very first time. It was different than anything I knew, totally uncomfortable and FAR outside of my comfort zone. It was however, the first time that I ever realized that there was another way. It was the first time I knew with total clarity that I actually had a choice as to how I earn my income and how I spend my time. What a powerful moment when it hit me that an ordinary person like me could create an extraordinary future for myself and my family just by making a decision to take a different path. Not an easy path, mind you. Most people didn’t get what was so apparent to me. I didn’t want to settle in mediocrity any longer and I chose the amazing industry of Network Marketing as my vehicle to FREEDOM!!!

I am writing this today because I just spent the past 3 days with 2 of my 6 Grand Children during their Spring break and I’m reminded this morning of what a gift it is that I have the freedom to do that. I never want to take this for granted!!! Nor do I want to miss the opportunity to share with you the choice that each of us have to embrace our lives and CHOOSE to live our dreams by creating the future we desire. I made a choice to change and it is my absolute passion to encourage, coach and mentor anyone who is ready to move forward and embrace this amazing journey called life.
Blake and Emerson have gone back home today after a packed 3 days. We ate too much, played too hard and as I sent them on their way, I took a deep breath and thanked God for the beautiful abundant life that I now live. It feels amazing to wake up each day and know that I will do exactly what makes my heart feel good!!! These past 3 days made my heart feel great!!!
